Foosball Tournament

Last night, I joined my very first foosball tournament. I wanted to do something different, so I went to washingtonpost.com’s city guide, yeah the “Unsuck your life” city guide as posted before. I found there was a foosball tournament in a bar about 35 min away. It took me almost an hour because I got lost.

I consider myself the “above average foosball player”, but to my surprise, those are all professionals. I didn’t know there was such a thing as a “foosball professional”. They go on major tours, play small tournaments for points, have specific rankings, and travel for major foosball tournaments (also didn’t know there was such a thing). Needless to say, I totally got whipped.

I was randomly assigned a partner. This guy’s from Iran a long time ago, and has been playing for about 20 years. I almost felt bad for him because he got stuck with me. But he was really nice and didn’t seem to mind. Those guys can all pass from 5-3 line with ease, and shoot their favorite “set shots” so quick you don’t even see it, you just hear the ball going in.

Overall, the team I was on won 1 game and lost 2, which got us eliminated from the tournament. I had a lot of fun and I’m glad I got to see what’s possible in Foosball.

No way, Rock Paper Scissors championship? Niiiiiiiice. When I was in China, we had nothing to do waiting on the bus, and I played a lot of Rock Paper Scissors. It DOES require a lot of psych outs and experience.

Example, both people played Rock. An inexperienced person will play paper next turn hoping the opponent will play rock again, a more experienced person will predict that and play scissors, and when you play people with experience, you anticipate all that and play rock again (but not against people without experience because they'll simply play paper).

That's is my nerdy side leaking out a little. I'm the king at stupid little games that don't take a lot of strategy. Nobody can beat me at tic-tac-toe. :)

that's kinda crazy lol but i know you're right. i was watching the match on espn late one night and was amazed of how serious some people took it. i always thought it was just a game of chance or random luck, but the more i watched the more i could tell that there is definately strategy. you should go to vegas next time they have it, i think you would go far ;)

Nah, I'm the "above average" Paper Rock Scissors player, kinda like I'm the "above average" foosball player. But by no way I'm good enough to compete with those guys, unless I totally randomly throw it out without any strategy, and hope to win 50/50.

The one at my job's the Tornado type (the one on the left), which is my fav kind due to more control.

I'll be out of town the weekend of July 7-9, and gone again July 15-16. Other than that, I should be available to hang out.
